PEARLS ON THE MOON

OVERVIEW OF THE PLAY:
The play concerns Ruth, a young New York poet, who returns to her home in Iowa when her mother, Rose, is finally incarcerated in a mental institution. The story centers on Ruth's love for her mother and their shared belief that Ruth alone can make Rose well. Ruth comes into intense conflict with the institution's psychiatrist who is determined to treat Rose with electro-shock therapy. The play, set in the mental institution over the course of a weekend, moves from the present to an impressionistic past as Ruth remembers her childhood pact with her mother's fantasy world.
